On Feb. 2, 2015 The New Yorker’s Wil S. Hylton wrote “A Bug In The System” about Rick Schiller, who bought Foster Farms chicken thighs in September 2013. He contracted salmonella Heidelberg and suffered extreme swelling, an inflamed colon and a form of arthritis. “His doctors warned that he might never recover.” While Europeans run well funded and enforced food safety programs, the USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service is not. Three thousand Americans die from contaminated food each year. Without better enforcement, ordinary people sue.  Rick Schiller contacted Bill Marler, an attorney in Seattle who deals with food safety cases.
