By  John Douglas and Mark Olshaker

John Douglas was one of the last of J. Edgar Hoover’s G-Men who hunted serial killers. At the FBI, he developed profiles on people like Ted Bundy. Apparently Douglas predicted that Bundy would live in Seattle, be in the legal profession, a registered Republican and drive or collect Volkwagen vehicles. Every page of this book seems to have a horror story.  How do we prevent this? Douglas, a hardboiled cop and conservative, thinks society creates them and can prevent them.

“Bill Tafoya, the special agent who served as our ‘futurist’ at Quantico, advocated a minimum of a ten-year commitment of money and resources on the magnitude of what we sent into the Persian Gulf. He calls for a wide-scale reinstatement of Project Head Start, one of the most effective long term, anticrime programs in history. He doesn’t think more police are the answer, but he would bring in “an army of social workers” to provide assistance for battered women, homeless families with children, to find good foster homes. And he would back it all up with tax incentive programs.”

May 13, 2013 Barney Frank US Congress Retired

Commonwealthlogo3 Frank Barney Shafer Scott

On May 13, 2013 in San Francisco at the Fairmont Hotel, The Commonwealth Club hosted Barney Frank, Former Member of Congress (D-MA). He discussed his years in Congress with Scott Shafer of KQED. He is unhappy with the unwillingness of Republicans to work with Democrats that led to the financial crisis in 2008. In light of the mortgage meltdown, he thinks it is important to develop affordable housing. Not everyone needs to own a home, but they should at least have reasonable rents. As many people discovered during the Great Recession, a mortgage is basically renting a house from a bank. Unless you have a thirty year job to pay for that thirty year mortgage, it is going to be a risky wager. He also talked about the growing support for gay marriage and life after politics with his husband in Maine.

Jun. 6, 2011 The New Yorker

On Jun. 6, 2011 The New Yorker’s Ryan Lizza wrote “Romney’s Dilemma” about how Mitt Romney’s Healthcare reform was adopted as the foundation for Obama’s plan so that Republicans would not object. After all, it was a Republican idea.

Louis Menand wrote “Live and Learn” about why college is necessary. It educates and socializes. It is necessary for a highly developed democratic society.
