President Franklin Delano Roosevelt said “On December 7, 1941, a date which will live in infamy, the United States of America was suddenly and deliberately attacked by naval and air forces of the Empire of Japan.”
I met a Japanese soldier who became a Buddhist monk after the war. I asked how this could have happened if there were so many Buddhists and theoretically pacifists in that country. He asked how wars could have happened with so many Christians in other countries. He said sometimes people use religion as an excuse to do horrible things to each other. His solution to other people being bad was to try to be a better person. He acknowledged the pain and suffering he had caused. He gave his money and worldly possessions to those he had harmed. He wanted me to take a picture of himself meditating with his eyes open to the world around him. He said too often people he called bookstore Buddhists posed with their eyes closed to shut out the world. He said open eyes showed an open mind and connection to the world.
BTW: He was an excellent teacher and swordsman.
