Aug. 4, 2015 Northwest Heatwave

I was covering a story in Portland about some demonstrators trying to stop a Shell Oil icebreaker from leaving port. The ship may be obsolete by the time it gets to the Arctic Ocean. It was a hundred degrees Fahrenheit in Portland. This is very unusual. People there are not set up for that kind of heat. Most buildings do not have air conditioning. It is so hot and dry that the entire state of Oregon is in a fire danger zone.

People are rethinking how they live. One person I know bought a house that backs onto some open space. It seemed like a great idea until they realized that one spark out there could cause a wildfire and burn their house down. They spent last weekend clearing the brush around the property. Next weekend they are putting the place up for sale. Knowing what most people know, who would buy it?

Weird weather in the Wild West. The other day it was ninety degrees Fahrenheit in Seattle and Portland. I know people in both places who moved to get away from the heat in California. Now it is as hot and humid as a Tennessee Williams play. Looking forward to Portland community theater summer productions of  “Sustainable Mass Transit Named Desire” or “Rescue Cat From A Hot Tin Roof” or “This Property Is Condemned For Its Carbon Footprint.”
