Dec. 6, 2011 Edward Tufte Presenting Data and Information

On Tuesday, December 6, 2011, at the Westin in San Francisco, Edward Tufte spoke to an overflow crowd about analytical design. Tufte is author of three landmark books: “Visual Display Of Quantitative Information”, “Visual Explanations” and “Beautiful Evidence.” He is a dynamic speaker and thinks if your statistics are boring, no amount of design can make them more interesting. How you think and write about something will help you visualize it. Find more interesting numbers and you will have a more engaged audience. Sports pages are excellent examples of how to display complex information and PowerPoint slides are not. He sees great potential in tablets like the iPad breaking down the silos of audio, visual, text and video to tell stories.

Full disclosure: Many years ago, Tufte encouraged me to pursue my visual communication skills. He turned out to be right. I highly recommend his books, although I suspect they will soon be only available in digital form.
