Doug Engelbart 1925-2013

Last week I attended a demonstration of gesture technology, where a user waves their arms in front of computer to create a piece of art. It was the kind of user interface that Doug Engelbart would have loved. I was working on the article and intended to send a link to Doug Engelbart when I got the news of his passing at the age of 88. When asked about his achievements, Einstein said that he stood on the shoulders of giants. I learned otherwise. It is rare to get to meet your heroes and rarer still to get to know them. You discover that they are people just like anyone else. Engelbart thought that if we all worked together we could solve problems we face. He thought the collaborative process would be more important than any single device we could invent. Together ordinary people can do extraordinary things. That is what I learned from Doug.
