On Apr. 8, 2017 The New York Times reporter Bettina Elias Siegel wrote “New Mexico Outlaws School ‘Lunch Shaming”. Governor Susana Martinez signed the Hunger-Free Students’ Bill of Rights. Children will no longer be singled out because their parents do not have enough money for a school lunch. It is easier to learn on a full stomach. Learning good nutrition should start early.
“People on both sides of the aisle were genuinely horrified that schools were allowed to throw out children’s food or make them work to pay off debt,” said Jennifer Ramo, executive director of New Mexico Appleseed, an anti-poverty group that spearheaded the law. “It sounds like some scene from ‘Little Orphan Annie,’ but it happens every day.”
