The power of photojournalism is to capture and communicate in a single picture what has happened in the world. Last week, a picture on the news showed a drowned boy washed ashore in Turkey. He was a Syrian refugee trying to get to Europe with his family. People around the world saw this picture and suddenly there was global support for these refugees.

The picture drives home the point that the problems of other people will become your problems if they are ignored. The problems don’t go away, they get bigger. While someone in relative safety may be sitting at home looking at family vacation pictures of their own children at the beach, some other family is struggling to survive. Keep them in mind. Just because it is not happening to you does not mean it is not happening. To you. Yet.
