Killing The Messenger
Being a journalist can be dangerous. The facts make it clear. According to the Committee to Protect Journalists, 36 journalists have been killed worldwide this year. Reporters Without Borders reports 50 journalists killed. International Press Institute reports 54. The International Federation of Journalists reports 83. Many of them are independent citizen journalists, not affiliated with traditional media. They risk everything to find the truth.
I often wonder what the killers are thinking. The bad guys inevitably accuse journalists of being spies. Maybe they are, but maybe they are spying for the rest of the world who need to know about your activities. Are you doing something wrong? If your organization cannot hold up to rigorous reporting, then perhaps you need to rethink what you are doing. If you want good press, be nice to the press. (Consider being nice to everyone.) Killing a journalist will not kill the story, it will only attract more journalists who are looking for an uncomfortable truth. If you can’t handle the truth, there are some journalists who can.
With Internet everyone can become a journalist. Think about that when one is killed.
