On July 30, 2014 the Silicon Valley Metro’s Jennifer Wadsworth wrote “Native Son” about Native American tribes surviving in California. The Amah Mutsun tribal band of Ohlone/Costanoan’s traditional territory was on the central coast. There are are only a few hundred members and they are fighting for recognition by the government.
Wadsworth wrote “They could raise the profile of a tribe that had dropped off the map and out of history. Until then, the tribe never spoke publicly about themselves, a silence left over from a time when their identity could get them killed.”
Psychologist Dr. Donna Schindler said “They call it a soul wound, and it affects all native people who have been colonized.””It causes this traumatic wound, just like someone who’s gone to war. Left alone, it never heals.”
