On July 19, 2007 in Redwood City, the STC Silicon Valley Chapter had a strategy meeting. The question was asked, “What if there was no STC?” We were at Andrea Ames’ house on a hill overlooking San Francisco Bay. The view was stunning but the news was bad. STC was losing members and money. Viki Maki asked the question and we had to think about what our world would be like without STC. Not good. Saving an existing international organization is much easier than starting from scratch. We had to come up with a strategy that would save not just the chapter but would be able to help the larger organization as well. It would require the kind of personal and professional risks that few people would be willing to take.
The immediate goal was to keep the lights on. Keep the meetings going. Fix the website. Get on social networking. Attract a new generation of talented leadership. No matter what, help people find work. The long term goal was to revitalize STC, to change with the world around it.
We met our goals. Every time somebody gets a job through STC, our members can take pride in making that happen. A new generation of leadership is moving STC forward. Think about that as you go to the Summit this year.
