The Age Of Edison

Electric Light And The Invention Of Modern America

By Ernest Freeberg

People have compared Thomas Edison to Steve Jobs. After reading this book I understand the comparison. He was not necessarily the first to come up with an idea but he did know how to develop and market his ideas successfully. He made sure that the light bulb was easy to install and operate that even a child could use it. Behind that simplicity Edison and other inventors developed an incredibly complex manufacturing and distribution process we now call the grid. The result was a speeding up of other technological and social progress. What started as an unregulated expensive and dangerous new technology for the wealthy became a regulated cheap and safe infrastructure for all. This is a kind of heads up to the current crop of robber barons on what is going to happen. Recommended.
