July 12, 2010 SDF Security And Marketing

On July 12, 2010 in East Palo Alto at DLA Piper the SDForum the Marketing and Security SIGs hosted Phil Burton of the 280 Group. His presentation was “What Every Product Manager Needs To Know About Security.” Burton has a Civil Engineer degree from MIT, Certified Information System Security Professional (CISSP), Certified Product Manager and Certified Product Marketing Manager through the Association of International Product Marketing & Management.

With the most notable privacy issues raised by Facebook and Google, Burton talked about the ramifications of security breaches on social media web sites. “The lack of effective privacy can create real risks to a company’s revenues and business model.” Private information still has value. Criminal organizations and some governments are constantly attempting and in many cases successfully breaching social networking sites and gathering information to sell on the black market. While there has been talk about younger users not caring about personal information being publicly available, that changes when such information is used against them as they seek employment or a loan. If your business takes no serious steps to protect private information, you will lose customers.

Burton closed with a short discussion of the “Internet of Things.” We face the prospect of people keeping track of our every move will be tied to the things we carry.
