As part of our 50th Anniversary, the STC Silicon Valley Chapter is holding a special event on Tuesday May 27, 2008 between 6:00 and 8:00 PM at the Computer History Museum. There will be a tour of the Visible Storage and Babbage exhibits, food and recognition of long time members. Text from DJCline.com.
I looked at the first newsletter from 50 years ago. It was four typewritten sheets showing where a handful of members worked, mostly in the defense industry. It was only a few months after the Soviets launched Sputnik and there was some doubt if America could create technology to win the Cold War. It did, but not the way anyone expected.
The defense companies needed to process information in a very small space and communicate to create more accurate weapons. They did that but in the process created cheap powerful computers and a network to communicate. The resulting technology created jobs and the global economy that we have today.
The STC Silicon Valley chapter was a part of this from the beginning. Our members either developed or were the first to use tools that every technical communicator uses today. They continue to work in every conceivable part of Silicon Valley from Google to Intel to Genentech. Let us continue our work in the next fifty years.
